Never overlook feelings, as this will teach your child to hold things in without expressing how they feel. This is a harmful habit that can be detrimental to their overall mental health.

  1. Listen

Sometimes parents forget that their children need someone to listen to them. While only listening may be difficult as a parent, your child will feel comfortable with your presence.

An excellent method to practice is asking your teenager if they want you to listen or give advice. This lets them voice their needs and allows you to react accordingly. If they need you only to listen, always be attentive and comforting.

Teenagers often have different perspectives than most adults. Their fewer life experiences give them an outlook that is heavily impacted by emotion. Therefore, it’s your job to respect their views without putting them down.

Some teens struggle with expressing their emotions no matter what. If this is the case for your teenager, they may need healthy outlets to release their feelings. Great ideas for emotional outlets include:

  • Writing/Journaling
  • Relaxing
  • Drawing

As outlets are used for their emotions, they will begin feeling better. This also teaches them to deal with problems without negative outbursts or reactions.
